Episode 092-Death by Convenience: Part Two

Welcome to Part Two of my post-mortem on 2010-2019, the Decade of Dread!

Was 2010 to 2019 an embarrassment of riches, or just an embarrassment?

The honest answer is…BOTH.

This is my deep dive into “the State of Horror” as we move towards a new decade and brace ourselves as we walk into the maelstrom that is 2020.

In Part Two, I investigate the dark side of the geek and horror culture throughout the decade.

This episode is a critical look at some of the trends that weren’t so hot, some trends and innovations that started with so much promise but, sadly, went south in the execution.

I look at how we as horror fans and horror creators handled ourselves during a decade of extreme changes and social upheaval.

I closed out Part One with a list of my favorite horror films from 2010-2015, and I’ll close out Part Two with the list of my favorite horror movies from the years 2016-2019 and discuss what movie I feel defined the decade. It’s bound to be controversial!

I hope you enjoy the show!

  1. A FEW THOUGHTS ON THIS EPISODE…
    1. This episode was well thought out, contemplative, deep, and very cynical. And I agreed with every word. You have the ability to look much deeper into the movies than I very could and see trends, concepts and ideas that go right over my head. Then when I hear the podcasts its similar to having a blind opened in a room and the light I could just barely glimpse through the closed slats come flooding in and I can suddenly see it.
    2. You shouldn’t feel that your complaints were “petty” as you stated for your reason on delaying this episode. First defending your fellow man and woman against threats, poor behavior and small thinking is never petty. Neither is urging your fellow man to be better than that. Even if you don’t agree with that, your “job” isn’t to cure the virus or discuss it (unless its part of your podcast agenda); its to entertain and to open our minds to the deeper meaning of horror. We all need distractions from the depression and tension and your podcast is part of that. Thank you.
    3. I was wondering why you didn’t include “Joker” in the 2019 horror movies to watch. Did you not like it or did you not consider it horror? If you consider Dirty Harry and the Unforgiven as hidden horror than surely this qualifies. I honestly think of it as a horror movie more than I do Shape of Water. To me that was more romance/fantasy than horror. The Joker on the other hand delves into a descent into madness and is a clear example of the us and them mentally you spoke so well on in this podcast. The scene in his apartment when the 2 men come to see him about the gun they gave him cemented this as true horror to me. Just was curious on your thoughts.
